Drôme, a department in southeastern France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, has long been a land of passage and asylum. It owes its name to the river that flows through it. It was a territory of resistance against Nazism and a refuge for persecuted Jews, and the Vercors massif still bears the scars of this.
